20% efficiency increase

Greater transparency

Better user experience

Following the recent launch of our newly redesigned trading tools for suppliers, ShipServ caught up with Stefan Kristensen, the region leader of BEVI A/S, and Tina Jørgensen, Purchasing & Logistics Manager at BEVI A/S, whose team in Denmark have been trialling our new and enhanced feature-rich quoting solution, Trade Business.

Tell us a bit about your company?

“BEVI A/S was founded in 1931, and we’re specialists in energy efficient drive systems and power generation. Indeed, we’re one of Scandinavia’s largest companies in this area, providing a significant range of electric motors, as well as transmission devices, power electronics, coil winding material and starter equipment.

We provide products for a number of sectors, however, BEVI’s Danish operation, where I am based, is dedicated to the marine industry.

BEVI is also part of Addtech, a Swedish publicly listed technology trading group, which has more than 2,000 employees, selling high-tech products and solutions to customers around the world.”

What is your primary offering for the marine industry?

“Electric motors are our core business and we pride ourselves in always being at the cutting edge of product development based on our rich history, longevity, deep knowledge and experience.

Our motors are used for driving multiple parts and systems within a vessel, such as oil pumps and water-cooling pumps for main engines.

The shipping industry has significantly evolved over the past ten years, predominantly driven by environmental regulation, from IMO 2020 and ballast water to the drive for decarbonisation and increased sustainability.

While this has required specialist motors for capital equipment, such as scrubbers and ballast water management systems, all shipowners and operators are also scrutinising every element of their vessels to optimise performance and generate efficiency gains.

We’ve therefore been evolving our motors in line with this, providing more energy efficient products, such as IE2, IE3 and IE4 class motors that have higher efficiency and a longer lifetime, and require vessels to use less energy for driving specific systems.

Also, several years ago, standard motors would be used at a constant speed.

Now though, we use invertors to optimise the cooling of a motor, again delivering a higher efficiency.

While they may be small marginal gains, such as improving the efficiency of a motor from 95% to 97.5%, if a motor is running on a 24 hour per day basis, it adds up significantly.”

Why did you subscribe to ShipServ’s Trade Business?

“We moved to Trade Business four months ago with the primary objective of growing our customer base amongst smaller to mid-sized shipowners and operators.

We currently work with some of the largest shipping companies in the industry, such as Maersk, Torm and Seaspan, where we get lots of RFQs that need to be responded to quickly, accurately, and dynamically.

In the short time we’ve been using Trade Business, we’re already seeing significant benefits and want to replicate that amongst a larger customer base.”

Create impact with real data

"The ability to respond to RFQs quickly and accurately has increased the efficiency of our team by up to 20%, which has been significant in enabling us to deliver more. Also, the faster you quote, the more quotes you win, and that’s obviously very good for business."

Can you highlight some of these benefits you’ve been seeing with Trade Business?

“First and foremost, the ability to respond to RFQs quickly and accurately has increased the efficiency of our team by up to 20%, which has been significant in enabling us to deliver more.

Also, the faster you quote, the more quotes you win, and that’s obviously very good for business.

Some of the new features of Trade Business, including the streamlined navigation and in particular, enabling large file attachments, has also significantly enhanced the user experience. For example, we can now attach large data sheets right away, which ensures that specifications of the products that we are supplying to the customer match, and we avoid any inaccurate deliveries.

This is really important, as many customers, inevitably, do not have the detailed technical knowledge of our products, so this ensures that we are delivering the right motors for their needs.

Trade Business also ensures that there is complete transparency across our team with any RFQ; we have the entire document history in one place, which makes it easier to have a constant overview of any given project.

It also means that we don’t have to search for each RFQ once we win an order, as everything needed to handle the order is right there in the same document.

This is particularly important for us as a team, as we’re often required to work simultaneously across multiple projects, where one colleague may have to pick up something I’m working on and vice versa.

We truly believe that our ability to do this makes us an even stronger team, and a sustainable and valuable supplier, and Trade Business really helps us deliver this.

We’ve also found the increased accessibility of Trade Business, where you can use it on any device, from mobile or tablet to laptop, incredibly useful. This was particularly important during the lockdown as a result of COVID-19, where we were required to work from home, but we could remain co-ordinated as well as we were when we were in the office.

The reality that elements of remote working will become the norm in daily business life, makes this feature very useful.

What are the key areas of focus for you in the future?

“We want to focus on expanding our customer base on ShipServ, as well as migrating as many customers onto the platform who are currently not using it, as it makes everything a lot smoother and more efficient.

As a business, we also want to continue to grow and take advantage of the shipping industry’s sustainability drive, helping shipowners and operators, through our knowledge and experience, fully optimise their operations and become more efficient and profitable.
