ShipServ to disable TLS v1.0 and v1.1 protocols on 8th April 2023

What is the change?

On Saturday, 8th April 2023, ShipServ will disable the TLS v1.0 and v1.1 encryption protocols on https://www.shipserv.com. This means that ShipServ customers who uses these deprecated protocols may no longer be able to connect from web-based applications, APIs or via integration links such as MTMLlink-FX.

Why is this happening?

ShipServ takes the protection of its customer data very seriously, and the disabling of these protocols will help ensure high security standards and promote the safety of your data as well as align with industry-wide best practices.

How might this affect me?

If you are using old TLS versions (v1.0 and/or v1.1), you will be unable to connect to https://www.shipserv.com after changes have been made.

If you are using MTMLlink-FX v6.0.3 and below, please see below article.

If you are using ShipServ PO Downloader, please see below article.

What should I do to prepare?

  1. Check what TLS version you are using. If unsure, please check with your IT team.

  2. If you are uncertain of the TLS version, you should download the ShipServ Communications Tester tool, following the instructions below and run it on each computer where you log in to the ShipServ website, and on each computer where you use ShipServ programs such as the MTMLlink-FX, QuoteSelect and/or PO Downloader.

The tool will connect to a ShipServ test server ( https://test.shipserv.com ) which has TLS v1.0 and TLS v1.1 disabled, and report a success or fail result to you.

If you get a fail result you should plan to upgrade your Encryption Protocol before 8th April 2023. Useful reference: How to enable TLS 1.2 on clients

ShipServ Communications Tester :

Please follow the steps below to download and install ShipServ Communications Tester tool on your computer where ShipServ MTMLlink-FX runs : this will help test that your computer will be able to communicate correctly with the ShipServ TradeNet servers after 8th April 2023.

N.B. This program requires that you have the Microsoft .NET Framework installed : you will already have this installed on your computer if you use ShipServ MTMLlink-FX programs. You can download the .NET Framework from microsoft.com.

If you don't use ShipServ MTMLlink-FX programs - for example, if you use Trade - then you don't need to use the Communications Tester program : you can just click this link to test your web-browser : if the page displays a 'success' message then your web-browser will work OK with ShipServ after 8th April 2023.

Download and Installation of the Communications Tester program:

  1. Click here to download ShipServCommTester.zip (456 KB)

  2. When prompted to Open, Run or Save, select the "Open" or "Save" option. Then extract the files into an empty folder on your Desktop or C: drive, and double-click on ShipServTLSCommTester.exe to run it.

  • First, just click the 'Start' button. After about 2-3 seconds you should see 'Success' messages.

  • If you don't see the 'Success' messages, the second test is to change 'URL' to 'https://www.shipserv.com/tradenet/MTMLLink.asmx', then click 'Start' again.

  • If you see a 'Success' message connecting via https://test.shipserv.com/, it means no further action needed and you will still be able to connect after the 8th of April 2023

  • If you see a 'Success' message connecting via https://www.shipserv.com/ and NOT on https://test.shipserv.com/, it means you are connecting via TLS 1.0 / 1.1, and will be unable to connect to www.shipserv.com after changes have been made on 8th April 2023

  • Please send an email to our Platform Support team, along with a screenshot and log (<Extracted folder>\ShipServTLSCommTester\log\*.log) of the error as an attachment, for further assistance.

Here is a screenshot of the results:

If you see the "PROCESS DONE" message as shown above when connected to https://test.shipserv.com/ then your computer will still be able to connect OK after 8th April 2023.

ShipServ Platform Support can give guidance on how best to use the Tester for your particular situation. Please contact support@shipserv.com for more details.
